Basenji

Physically the Basenji resembles paintings of dogs found on the walls of Egyptian tombs that date back 5000 years. Meet another member of the ancient dog breeds of the world.

The History

This northern African dog has traditionally been used by native people for a variety of duties, however their primary use was hunting. Evidence of their domestication dates back long before the pyramids were built and they are thought to be the direct ancestor of the northern African prehistoric dog.

This breed is unique in that they don’t bark. They have vocal chords & can make noise, in fact they have quite a repertoire – but sound more like a coyote than a dog.

Alaskan Malamute

The largest of the Arctic dogs, the Alaskan Malamute is a Nordic sled dog that comes from the Arctic Wolf. Meet another member of the ancient dog breeds of the world.

The History

The Malamute name comes from the Mahlemut tribe in Alaska who bred these hardy animals & their use by this tribe dates back 2 to 3 thousand years. A highly valued member of society, the Malamute pulled sled was the primary source of transportation over frozen tundras.

Their keen sense of smell, hardiness & inner compass have made them the dog of choice for Polar expeditions throughout the years.

Akita Inu

Native to the island of Honshu in the region of Akita, Japan this breed has remained unchanged for centuries. Meet another member of the ancient dog breeds of the world.

The History

This breed is considered the national dog of Japan and is one of the 7 ancient breeds that is also a National Monument. Considered a symbol of luck, the Akita is used for a variety of purposes in Japan.

There are two types of Akita animals, the original Japanese breed and the newer American Akita which is a US variation of the original.

Afghan Hound

Perhaps the most elegant of the dog breeds, the Afghan Hound is definitely one of the most recognizable. Their lineage dates back thousands of years and they are the first ancient dog breed we’ll be sharing.

The History

The Afghan dogs are native to Sinai and are referenced to in Egyptian & Afghanistan accounts from over 4000 years ago. Their slender, noble nose is clearly reminiscent of Anubis himself.

These animals were highly prized so their lineage was kept relatively pure and their export was highly prohibited for centuries.
